Books for Pagan Children: Preschool (R)

Previous

It can be difficult to find books for your Pagan children to read. You want books that teach them your values, and maybe something close to your beliefs and traditions.

I have compiled a list of good books by great authors. Many are outright Pagan. Some are Pagan in flavor or Pagan-friendly. I am noting when the author is a confirmed Pagan to encourage support of Pagan authors and artists. If you know an author is Pagan, but they aren't marked as such, send me a message and I will correct it.

  • Rabbit's Good News by Ruth Lercher Bornstein (Fantasy)

Poetic text and brightly hued pastel drawings capture springtime's sweet smells, soft sounds, and blooming colors in this simple, captivating story for very young children. Leaving her warm dark hole, Rabbit uses all her senses to explore the telltale signs that something wonderful is happening-spring has arrived.

  • Rainbabies, The by Laura Krauss Melmed (Fantasy)

In the magic of a moonshower, a childless couple find a dozen tiny babies in the grass. Small enough to rock to sleep in a pair of wooden shoes, the children never grow. Even the tiniest babies can bring big adventures, though, and these little ones seem to find trouble as easily as bees find flowers. But the old couple's love never waivers and in the end they are rewarded with their hearts' desire.

  • Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson (Fantasy)

The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch's hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?
**Bonus Material - Netflix has a short cartoon based on the book! **

Rupert learns more in this second book about making magick, including the meaning of symbols, some that are familiar and some that are new to him. Rupert meets Grandmother Spinner, a very wise spider who helps him to understand why three children are gathering items in the forest to build an altar; and Goddess makes an appearance to teach Rupert and some of his friends how the moon reminds people of the Maiden, Mother, and Crone.
